The Co-mmunity Mural
In the spring of 2026 posAbilities and Co-leidoscopes came together to co-create a community mural for the storefront of Co-mmunity Shop in East Vancouver.
The Co-mmunity Shop is led by Co-leidoscopes and its mission is to create inclusive opportunities for young adults to explore identity, navigate life transitions, build meaningful relationships, and contribute to their communities through shared experiences and collective care.
This project came about through a partnership between them and posAbilities, as both organizations share a deep commitment to inclusion, creativity and community care. The mural acted as an invitation: to connect, to collaborate, and to imagine what inclusive community art can look like when built together. Asking the broader question - What becomes possible when people with and without disabilities create alongside one another?
The process begun with community consultation, where posAbilities’ lead Community Artist, Aaniya Asrani, met with the folks that most use the Co-mmunity shop and asked them what kind of imagery they would like to see in the space. The mural was then collaboratively designed and brought to life by community members with diverse lived experiences and abilities. Through shared art-making, participants had opportunities to connect across lines of difference, learn from one another, and leave a visible mark on the neighbourhood together.
This project built reciprocal relationships between organizations and community members, created an accessible opportunity for artists of all abilities and skill levels to participate and foster stronger social connections amongst each other. It deepend community’s presence and engagement within the neighbourhood and encouraged cross-pollination between patrons, artists, and persons served, celebrating creativity as a tool for community building.
This mural is one small but meaningful step toward a more inclusive city - one where difference is celebrated, creativity is accessible, and everyone has opportunities to contribute. We’re excited to see what emerges through this collaboration and grateful to everyone helping bring it to life.
