Why Art Rise?

We see art and creativity as critical to sociocultural change.

They show us the beauty in our differences and in the complexity of being human. They invite us to get to know ourselves, others and places, and to help to unlock the goodwill that exists in people and in neighbourhoods.

They help us to imagine and build the world we want to inhabit.

This work begins in the power of moments: moments of beauty, of connection, of contemplation, of inspiration. We will need art and creativity for that.

And courage. And others.

Art Rise is a place where we can profile amazing artists who are similarly minded, get a glimpse of their work, get inspired, share learning, and grow the community of practitioners.

What do we value?

Who are we?

posAbilities is a charity that provides a range of services to folks with developmental disabilities and their families. But we’re also more than that. Together with lots of partners, friends and kindred souls, we’re trying to build conditions for a just and caring society. For everyone. Our hope is to help build a world filled with stories of belonging, equality and love.

The “we” is much more than posAbilities. While some of the artists on this site are employees, many are not. We love to partner with people: students, outsider artists, community engaged artists, musicians, citizens and neighbours, faith organizations, universities, etc.

We’d love to see you and your work here, too, either because we’re doing something cool together, or because you’re doing something cool that is inspiring us. Either way, get in touch!

What is social practice art?

Social Practice Art is a term for artwork that uses social engagement as a primary medium. Artists working in the medium of social practice develop projects by inviting collaboration with individuals, communities, institutions, or a combination of these, creating participatory art that exists both within and outside of the traditional gallery and museum system. Artists working in social practice co-create their work with a specific audience or propose critical interventions within existing social systems that inspire debate or catalyze social exchange.
